Thailand is not an English speaking country. Many people in large cities will know some basic english, but not everyone. You can get by without speaking Thai, just don’t expect to have in-depth conversations. If possible learn a few basic phrases and keep a translator app on your phone. This shouldn’t be needed to et around and order food, but can be a great asset if more complex situations.
Thai food is widely considered some of the best cuisine in the world. In many countries, you have to go out of your way to hunt down outstanding food. In Thailand, you have to go out of your way to find bad food. Street food is part of the culture. You don’t need to go to a restaurant to have a great meal. And you don’t have to spend much either! Vegetarian options are available, but make sure to ask about the broths. They are often animal based.
In Thailand the weather is best described as hot and humid. Northern Thailand has three seasons, while the southern peninsula has two seasons. None of these seasons are cool by western standards.
As far as weather, the best time to visit Thailand is from November to February. During this period, the temperature ranges from 18 to 32 degrees Celsius in Bangkok.
Summer, is from March to June. During this time Bangkok temperatures average around 34c degrees. There are days that hit 40 degrees with humidity levels of 75%. 40c is 104F.
Traffic in Thailand can be crazy. They also drive on the opposite side of the road (if you are from the US)! Even crossing the road can be an adventure. The good news is that Cities like Bangkok have excellent public transportation, Grab works great and there is no shortage of private baht busses and bikes that will give you a ride for a modest fee. Keep in mind, traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for foreigners. Be careful if you decide to rent a motorbike
There is a lot more to Thailand than the popular tourist destinations. This is a country rich in culture with adventure around every corner. Pick a few major tourist destinations, but also set aside time for exploring. You will be surprised at the number of interesting places you will find and friendly people you will meet. Thailand is just as safe as your home country. Just use good common sense and you should be fine off the beaten path.
