In September 1863, the Confederate Army of Tennessee under General Braxton Bragg prepared to launch an assault on the successful Army of the Cumberland under General Williams S. Rosecrans. The attack was supposed to be a dawn attack on the Union left flank under George H. Thomas, but through miscommunications, the dawn attack got delayed hours. Former Vice President of the United States turned Confederate General John C. Breckinridge was tasked to launch that assault.
