Cosplay Craft: How to Read a Commercial Pattern
Sometimes cosplay can seem overwhelming because you just don’t know where to start. In this tutorial, costume designer Jerica will teach us all about how to read a pattern. She will explain how to choose the right pattern for a character, assemble notions and supplies, and choose the correct type of fabric for any project.
For this project you will need:
- A couple of commercial patterns for reference, one pre-cut for use
- Heavy paper to transfer the pattern to. Can be butcher paper or craft paper.
- Various fabrics in various widths
- Pencil
- Craft scissors
- Pounce wheel or tracing wheel and tracing paper
This video is part of our Radical Fit Cosplay Craft series.
Radical Fit is a Chicago Public Library YOUmedia initiative dedicated to teen fashion-making with a special focus on gender identity and equity.
Jerica Hucke is a lifelong maker and creator and is now the Draper at the Joffrey Ballet. Her greatest strength is her ability to problem solve any outlandish costume request, which is why she calls herself a Garment Engineer. This is a skill she honed working in storefront theatre in Chicago as a costume designer/stitcher/manager for about a decade. You have probably seen her work on the backs of busses and trains as marketing for the Joffrey, and she hopes to debut a new cosplay at GenCon this summer.
