Ken Fisher Examines Where Investor Sentiment Stands Going into 2022
Fisher Investments’ founder, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer Ken Fisher considers investor sentiment—how investors are feeling about markets—to be one of the most important factors influencing markets. Ken believes Sir John Templeton’s famous quote, “Bull markets are born on pessimism, rise on skepticism, mature on optimism and die on euphoria,” accurately captures investor sentiment progression throughout the stock market cycle.
Ken notes that, while Templeton’s quote is a good one, sentiment rarely moves in a perfectly straight line. Ken Fisher thinks we may have seen some hints of investor euphoria early in 2021, though that seems to have waned. He argues increased activity in areas such as special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) and the advent of non-fungible tokens earlier this year reflect characteristics of late-bull markets and potential investor euphoria. A reversal in some of these trends as the year progressed, such as declining SPAC activity, likely signals cooling investor sentiment.
Finally, Ken Fisher notes a pullback in investor sentiment—as we’ve seen this year—is likely a bullish tailwind for long-term investors. Persistent investor concerns help prevent sentiment from overheating, which should allow this bull market to keep running.
