Typhoon and Hurricane possible next week - May 7, 2024

Areas of interest could be brewing across the Pacific later this week into the weekend, with models starting to signal not only a typhoon in the Philippine Sea, but now a possible hurricane near Central America, on the Eastern Pacific side.

Invest 90W is currently located near the Yap region of the Micronesian islands, and either itself or a new disturbance to the east is expected to become a developing tropical storm by the weekend. Indications show that the potential storm will reach Palau on Sunday or Monday, and then intensify as it heads towards the Philippines. Forecasts are still very unclear about the storm's final track or intensity, and a weaker storm will favour a track through the Philippines, whilst a stronger storm as depicted by the GFS model would suggest a recurvature, bringing implications for the Japanese islands.

In the Eastern Pacific, whilst not yet marked, an area of interest could become a tropical storm the day before hurricane season officially begins next Wednesday, and may affect the coasts of Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and eastern Mexico.
