New typhoon threat in the Philippine Sea - June 6, 2023

Tropical Storm 03W formed earlier today roughly halfway between Guam and the Philippines, and is expected to intensify over the coming days. This system is expected to become another typhoon as it cruises northwestwards, before recurving over the weekend and accelerating towards the northeast into early next week.
Whilst the typhoon threat is appreciable, a larger rainfall threat is also on tap for southern and central Japan as the storm enhances an existing front, with up to 300mm possible along the south coast of Honshu. Poor sea conditions and a storm surge are also possible from this storm.

This upcoming typhoon could reach Category 3 or 4 intensity over the weekend into early next week.
