Typhoon Bolaven rolling towards Mariana Islands - October 10, 2023

Several significant storms are active tonight, with Typhoon Bolaven taking the headline as it begins to rapidly intensify shortly before making its closest pass or landfall in the northern Mariana Islands. A landfall on Tinian or Saipan cannot be ruled out later today, where a Typhoon Warning is in effect along with the island of Rota. Guam remains under a Tropical Storm Warning and Typhoon Watch. Bolaven is expected to crank it up further after passing the islands, and could become a super typhoon later this week as it recurves towards the northeast.

In the Eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm Lidia is almost a hurricane, and hurricane warnings are in effect for coastal Mexico and the Islas Marias. The storm could make landfall close to Puerto Vallarta tomorrow, although the scope of intensification remains unclear. A Category 2 hurricane landfall is entirely possible as we continue to monitor Lidia's progress.

Tropical Storm Max made landfall in central Mexico earlier today as a substantial tropical cyclone, and is now moving inland and starting to weaken. The storm could cause localised flash flooding and heavy rainfall.

Elsewhere, a tropical wave still bears tracking in the eastern Atlantic.
