Did We Do the BEST of BOGOTA, COLOMBIA?!

Bogota is the amazing, sprawling capital city of Colombia. We spent a day and a half exploring as much as we could of this enormous city, while getting some incredible bites along the way.

Our first stop was to try a local dish unlike no other. We stopped at La Puerta Falsa for some Chocolate Santafereno–hot chocolate with white cheese. What a tasty way to start the day and get some energy for our long day ahead.

We then set out for an audio walking tour around La Candelaria, a charming neighborhood full of incredible Spanish colonial buildings and history. Along the way we stopped at Plaza de Bolivar, the main square aligned with both government buildings and the Primatial Cathedral of Bogota. We also browsed the Museo Botero, a free museum donated by artist Fernando Botero, which has much of his own work but also houses many international artists.

Our next stop was the Museo de Oro, the gold museum dedicated to preserving pre-Colombian, indigenous works made of gold and other precious materials. It was incredible to see the ornate details preserved in gold throughout the museum.

After all the sightseeing, we built up quite an appetite, and stopped in for lunch at Restaurante la Escuela. This lunch spot with an incredible courtyard area is not only a great place to try Ajiaco soup–a delicious, creamy soup of chicken and vegetables–it’s also a culinary institute for disadvantaged youth.

We then went out for an evening tour for some drinks and entertainment. We first stopped at La Milagrosa brewery for a tour of the brewery and of course a sampling of their selection of beers. What a tasty treat! After our tasting, we went to play tejo–a local sport that involves throwing a rock at a clay board, with explosive triangles that pop when you hit them. Even though we may not have been amazing at it, we had lots of fun and enjoyed watching the triangles light up when people hit them.

Our final stop the next morning was to Santuario Monserrate, a sanctuary at the top of the mountain Monserrate. Going early in the morning, we took the funicular, but you can also go by cable car later in the day, or hike up and down. The incredible views of Bogota from the top were a great way to end our trip to Colombia!
