EATING our way through BRUSSELS BELGIUM!!

As the Capital of Europe, Brussels has much to offer in the way of incredible sights and delectable bites. We spent one busy day attempting to see and taste the highlights of what this incredible city has to offer.

We started our adventure early at the Grand Place, a historic market square that is home to some of the most ornate buildings in Europe. We stood in awe of the dazzling Town Hall, King’s house, and Swan House, to name a few. We took a few minutes to not only enjoy the sights of the buildings, but also enjoy the bustle of the square.

Belgium is well known for their waffles, and our hunger to start our day off right wouldn’t be complete without some tasty waffles. We tried both a Liege (a pearl sugar waffle with thick batter) and a Brussels waffle (a lighter waffle with even edges). We enjoyed these waffles at Maison Dandoy, and found that they are often just as good, maybe even better, without all the extra toppings.

Next we strolled through Galleries Royales St. Hobart, a glass-covered mall that is Europe’s oldest still-operating mall. The mall houses many high-end shops, including our new stop at Neuhaus for chocolate. We delighted in trying three different types of chocolates–pralines, truffles, and ganache. Be sure to try pieces of these chocolates, as they were some of the best we’ve ever had in the world.

We next walked down Rue des Bouchers, a restaurant area in town that had the weather not been cold and rainy, would likely have been busy and bustling. We stopped at Noordzee, a fish market/restaurant where we tried some delicious, piping-hot shrimp croquettes and fish soup. Perfect for a cold, rainy day!

After all the sightseeing so far, we built up a thirst for some delicious Belgium beer. We stopped at A la Mort Subite to try some of the historic types of beer that Belgium is known for.

Next we had to try Pommes Frites–or Belgium Fries. These are some of the best fries in the world known for being double fried in beef fat and made with high-quality potatoes. We enjoyed our fries with an array of sauces–we particularly enjoyed them with fresh Mayonnaise. Along the way we also enjoyed much of the street art and seeing the comics painted on the sides of buildings. Brussels is known as Comic City, as it has a history of being home to many famous comics including the Tin Tin.

Our last stop was the Manneken Pis, a tiny fountain statue that is a well-known sight of Brussels. The statue is quite small, but perhaps you will be able to see the boy dressed in one of his many costumes on your visit. We packed so much into one day, but know there is much more to see in this bustling city!
