EXPLORING MUNICH! Enjoying Sights in Bavaria's Capital

Taking part in German Christmas markets is an iconic Christmastime activity, and there is no better place to go than Munich to do so. Not only did we get to explore the historic city and many of its sights, but also were able to enjoy the city in the full Christmas swing.

Our first stop in Munich was Marienplatz, featuring the New Town Hall with the famous Glockenspiel. The Glockenspiel, which plays daily at 11am and noon, also tells a story of a noble wedding. Make sure to get there on time to see this unique attraction!

Munich is not short on churches, and we visited many in the city. Munich stayed Catholic after the Reformation, and so there are still many Catholic churches prominently featured throughout the city. The oldest church is St. Peters Church, which was formerly a monastery church. Mass was going on while we were visiting so we were unable to explore, but you are free to roam around the church any other time.

Along the way we walked on Kaufingerstasse, a busy shopping district that is mostly pedestrian-only, made that way after the Munich Olympics. If you have time to shop for any or everything, this is a must do in Munich.

Next up we stopped by a few more Catholic churches. We stopped by St. Michael’s Church, which is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. Mass was still going on, so we went to the Frauenkirche. The Frauenkirche is notable for its two green onion domes, but inside is definitely worth a stop to see some incredible stained glass art, some of which survived World War II.

Our next stop was another kind of church, the Hofbraeuhaus. This beer hall is iconic to the city, and although touristy, does have roots as being the brewery of the Bavarian king. Enjoy a liter of beer, or ein Mass, while there are Bavarian tunes being played. Soak it all up with some delicious local food. Prost!

After we had some good beer and good food, we stopped by the Residenz. This was the former palace to the Bavarian king, but is now a museum that is still set up to look as it once was. Enjoy walking through the lavish halls of ornate furniture, artwork, and decor, as well as visiting the crown jewels. There is an audio guide that is part of the tour, so use this to get a better understanding of the history of different pieces on display.

To enjoy more of the Christmas merriment, we could not travel to Munich without visiting some of the famous Christmas markets. With tons of stalls that include unique hand-crafted items as well as delicious local treats, there is something for everyone on your Christmas list! Don’t forget to try some Gluehwein–a hot mulled wine drink served in collectable mugs. Don’t stop the merriment at just one market–there are multiple! We also stopped at a medieval-themed market that had its own unique wears and music. We also got to take part in the Krampus parade–a parade of demons that scold bad children. Hopefully you aren’t on the naughty list!

Munich is an incredible city, and was made even more magical by visiting it at Christmastime!
