Trump Announces End to Trade Talks With Canada Over Anti-Tariffs Advert

This advert, sponsored by the government of Canada’s Ontario province, has caused US President Donald Trump to announce an end to trade talks with the nation - with immediate effect.

The advert takes clips from a 1987 national radio address by former Republican President Ronald Reagan, saying that tariffs “hurt every American.”

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Donald Trump wrote that the advert was “FAKE” and “egregious”, and said that trade talks were “HEREBY TERMINATED.”

The advert was sponsored by the government of Canada’s Ontario province. This comes after the Trump administration imposed a 35% levy on several Canadian imports, including cars, steel and manufacturing, and the province of Ontario has been particularly badly impacted by the measures.

The Ronald Reagan Foundation have since released a statement, saying the advert used “selective” audio and video of Reagan’s words, accusing it of misrepresenting Reagan’s address. It has also hit out at Ontario’s government for not getting permission to edit his remarks.

The foundation said it is now “reviewing its legal options.”
