SpaceX Cargo Dragon; The SpaceX Cargo Dragon CHANGES EVERYTHING!

For the fourth time in nine months, SpaceX has docked a Cargo Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station with a second Dragon already present at the crewed orbital laboratory.

The spacex Dragon is a fully autonomous spacecraft with both pressurized and unpressurized sections. The Cargo dragon is composed of two main elements: the pressurized cargo module, or “capsule,” and the unpressurized cargo module, or “trunk”. The cargo dragon capsule performs all the functions of a service module and is fully recoverable. It includes a pressurized section, a service section, and a nose cone, and contains all the structure and subsystems required for transport of pressurized cargo to the ISS. Cargo dragon’s trunk remains attached through launch and ISS operations but is jettisoned shortly before reentry.

A day after poor weather scrubbed a SpaceX launch, the company and NASA successfully sent a Cargo Dragon spacecraft into orbit from Kennedy Space Center. Closing out a 31-hour flight from a launch pad in Florida, a SpaceX Cargo Dragon capsule autonomously docked with the International Space Station on August 30th, delivering experiments, supplies, and fresh food for the astronauts living in space. Designed to be used on as many as five missions, the upgraded Cargo Dragon spacecraft was introduced with the launch of the CRS-21 mission in late 2020. The new cargo spacecraft, itself a derivative of the Crew Dragon, was introduced to enable shorter processing times between flights.

The Cargo Dragon utilized for the CRS-23 mission was the first to be re-flown having previously supported the CRS-21 mission, which splashed down in mid-January following a 35-day visit to the space station. Experiments that were on board included an ant farm, sea monkeys and plants sent up by Girl Scouts who monitored them using a new fully autonomous research system on the space station, while replicating the same tests on Earth. The spaceship docked with the ISS and will remain there for a month, before returning to Earth with completed experiments and other items no longer needed on the ISS.

The newly launched cargo dragon brings a treasure trove of science investigations to the ISS, including a new robotic arm to be tested inside the station's airlock. The robotic arm will prove that it has what it takes to perform the routine tasks of an astronaut.
