However, Qatar and Kaili have publicly refuted allegations of corruption.

The Qatari government has threatened to cut off natural gas supplies to the European Union. This ultimately resulted in Qatar's membership in the EP being suspended.

The Belgian police department published a photo of the 1.5 million euros in cash it had acquired following operations between Friday and Monday.

And among these items are two briefcases full of 50 euro bills and a bag stuffed with 100 euro bills.

Italian police are currently looking through seven suspicious bank accounts. Authorities also claimed to have discovered 20,000 euros in cash at a residence linked to one suspect. A Milanese office was also searched.

However, Kaili has been arrested and is currently being held in custody indefinitely.

Her attorney Michalis Dimitrakopoulos claims she denies any involvement with the money bags discovered by authorities. He also mentioned that Kaili had requested extra time to prepare for her detention hearing.

Dimitrakopoulos stated that they had been working along with the attorney that she has in Brussels. Furthermore, they decided to ask for a delay of a few days to get ready.

In the meantime, the other three suspects detained and charged last week were subjected to interrogation.

Francesco Giorgi, who is Kaili's spouse and works as an aide in the European Parliament, will also remain in prison.

Ex-Member of the European Parliament and leader of a nonprofit advocacy organization Pier Antonio Panzeri will also stay in jail.

And the rule of law advocacy organization's secretary-general, Niccolo Figa-Talamanca, will be allowed to leave jail as long as he wears an electronic ankle tag.

And now, Qatar warns that EU corruption allegations might affect gas negotiations.

A diplomat representing Qatar released a statement in which he specifically called out Belgian authorities and said they had relied on "incorrect" information.

Again, Greek MEP Eva Kaili is one of four persons arrested after police raids turned up at least 1.5 million euros.

The money was thought to have some sort of connection to a Gulf state. So, the European Union parliament demanded that Qatar's membership in the EU be suspended.

The issue has emerged at a time when several European countries are interested in obtaining liquefied natural gas supplies from Qatar.

The diplomat also expressed concern that regional and global security cooperation will suffer as a result of the decision. And imposing such a discriminatory restriction before the legal process has concluded is worrying.

He said they strongly refute any claims that their government is involved in corruption.

And he claimed that even though Qatar was not the sole suspect, his country had been singled out for criticism and attacks.
