1950's Doepke MG TD Vintage Toy Restoration

This is a 1950's Doepke MG TD Kit car. These cast aluminum kits were produced from 1954-1956 and allowed the customer to paint the car the color of their choice and put the entire car together using only screws. I found this old car at a local antique shop and picked it up for $65. It was missing several parts including headlights, windshield and the cover for the convertible top. It also had a tire with a hole in it and the steering wheel was broken. There are still parts available for these kits at www.thomastoysantiquetoyparts.com

The body of the car ended up giving me quite a bit of trouble. I first attempted to paint the body with a spray gun but the paint would not stick. So I stripped the car back down and ultimately had to resort to powder coating. I thought I had outgassed the body of the car, in the oven, long enough before powder coating but I was horribly wrong. The first powder coating was the worst I had ever seen. It was loaded with bubbles and the entire surface was bumpy. It took tons of sanding and two more rounds of powder coating to get the finish I was hoping for. All in all, I enjoyed the project. Some of my upcoming projects are too large for my powder oven so I will be practicing body work and spray gun painting. I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for taking the time to watch.
