Last season Lonzo shot 37.5% from 3 on 6.3 attempts per game. Now for the season he’s shooting 39% from 3 on 7.8 attempts. We are literally witnessing the transformation of Lonzo right in front of our eyes and no one is talking about it.

The corner that was previously a tough spot has now become a strength. The corner was airball central on the Lakers. He’s shooting 47.6% for the right corner 3 and 44.1% from the left. He’s actually shooting better from the corners than Steph Curry. He’s made more threes than Trae Young, in fact he’s actually 14th in 3 pointers made for the season. Yeah, he’s different now. Lonzo has literally morphed into the perfect player alongside Zion Williamson. Here’s a floor spacer, a playmaker, and solid defender. Oh yeah, defense. Based on BBall index, Lonzo Ball has taken the toughest defensive assignments in the NBA. You can look at his performance against Bradley Beal when he held him to 7 points in a half, and then when Lonzo left the game in the second half, Beal dropped 31. Or how Lonzo’s defense helped the Pelicans comeback from down 24 against the Celtics.

A lot of the shooting mechanics comes from a really solid dip into great energy transfer and a consistent follow through. A lot of people forget that Lonzo is a true 6’ 6” point guard with a 6’ 9” wingspan. He can rise above many defenders and with his new found confidence, he actually does. He holds the follow through and now his shot is pretty Honestly his jumpsuit has consistent mechanics. Now Lonzo still isn’t perfect. He really can’t pull up into a three like a Dame or Curry would, it’s more of a hop into a three. Off-dribble is where he needs to keep improving. The one thing he has is the step back going left, but he’s gonna need to add more scoring moves.

What irks me the most is how the Pelicans are somehow 19th in pace. Yup, 19th in the league despite having Lonzo and Zion on the roster. I’ve mentioned this before and I’m gonna say it again. You can clearly see that Lonzo is at his most aggressive in transition, looking to either make the pass in the disorganized defense, or go all the way to the rim, but he’s always looking to push the pace. It’s true that Lonzo has become much more valuable in a slower half-court setting, but eliminating the part he excels at just doesn’t make any sense.

I’m not gonna even lie, LaMelo is probably motivating Lonzo to be more aggressive. Actually since LaMelo has been starting, which is the last 15 games, Lonzo began to go on his own run. During LaMelo’s first 5 games of starting, Lonzo started shooting 47% from 3. When Lonzo had 27 points and 8 assists including 7 threes against the Bucks, LaMelo had 27 points and 9 assists one day later against the Bucks. Yeah talk about brotherly rivalry.

We already knew that Lonzo and Zion have been lethal in a fastbreak, their pick and roll game is strong because Lonzo hits Zion a bit earlier so he can gain momentum to bulldoze. I’ve covered this before, but Lonzo’s playmaking finds Zion in the spots he wants.

As Zion plays better, so will Lonzo. They a duo that can exponentially get better together which is not always a thing you can say. We know that Zion has so many ways to grow, man already bullying NBA players and he ain’t even 21 (show Zion bullying NBA players like you did before with help me sound effect). With Zion attracting even more attention, Lonzo will get more opportunities to catch and shoot which has been what’s happening, it’s how he’s geared his game and just as Lonzo becomes an even better shooter, the game becomes easier for Zion with more space. Just last season before the bubble, Zion’s net rating with Lonzo was 11.7 and without Lonzo was -4.1. There’s clearly a connection.

You know what’s funny. Lonzo has become a player that literally every team could use. He’s what the Clippers need, what the Bulls want, just a true 3 and D point guard that can fit with any superstar. But even Lonzo becoming this reliable player, no one’s talking about it. Just like with Zion, the world has slowly begun to forget about Lonzo, but I ain’t about to do that. What do you think?
