The Heat struggle without Butler in so many ways. We know that Jimmy is a pest defensively, but the biggest loss is Butler’s playmaking because man does he run that offense. The Heat are a slow team, they are a half-court offense team and it’s why they do so well in the playoffs, but without Jimmy, they have the second highest turnover percentage in the league. You might’ve not known, but Butler is averaging 8 assists per game. Yup, Jimmy Butler is 11th in the entire league in assists per game. And you know what, we saw it in the finals, when Butler was LeBron against… LeBron. I’ve talked about playoff Butler, heck we’ve seen playoff Butler against the Bucks, the Celtics, and the Lakers. Because the Heat were already in a dire must-win situation to make the playoffs this season, Butler had to already step up to keep them afloat. Butler doesn’t have a super long wingspan, but for a 6’ 7” guard that’s pretty much running the offense, he’s already longer than your average point guard meaning he gets a lot of new angles. He has an uncanny ability to pass while in mid air. His ability to read the moving parts of the Heat when he jumps in mid air and has only a split second to see the best option. There are times where it’s preplanned, where he knows how the defense is going to move. But there are a lot of times where he’s just able to see where his own teammates are going, especially from the paint.

Against the Cavs, Butler didn’t make a single jumper, scored 28 points on cuts and layups. It’s why in the past 7 games, he’s shooting 57.5% from the field. Even without the ball, Jimmy is annoying to guard. He’ll make backdoor cuts, he’ll try to get low post position and bump you in every way possible till you get annoyed, and he’ll figure out a way to get fouled. It’s a grown man and sometimes old man game, but it just works. Despite Butler being a guard, he has this strength in him. He’s not fast either. It comes from Butler never having been super skilled or talented, he wasn’t even recruited for college, so he had to grow up hustling for every loose ball, muscling his way through opponents, and that didn’t really change when he got in the NBA. So even when Jimmy’s not the ball handler, teams have to stop Jimmy from getting behind you, getting position, all while dealing with the constant shooters in Duncan Robinson, Kelly Olynyk, and Tyler Herro, the Heat can really be annoying to guard as a team. In the playoffs, the Heat made the most passes per game. The ball would move around the perimeter, into the post, and back out, but this season they are 19th. But that’s changing with Butler back.

And then there’s the defense. We know that Butler is not gonna make things fun for you and since Butler has returned, the Heat are the best defensive team in the league based on opponents points per game. Bam Adebayo played all those games Jimmy missed, but the Heat were just not good defensively. Even with Bam missing some games recently, the Heat have remained elite defensively. He’s their defensive quarterback. Players like Draymond organize a team’s defense and fire them up. Jimmy is that man for the Heat, he’s their leader.

The MVP award is confusing because we don’t have any consistent criteria. Sometimes, it’s all about numbers, who has the most mind boggling stat line. Other times, it’s about winning, being the best player on the best team. But what about the player that is the most valuable to their team? The Heat have ran multiple lineups, had players in and out of the lineup, but it’s painfully obvious that the one necessary player for them to be elite is Jimmy. Without him, they nearly become the worst team in the east. And his numbers are out of this world, but if you think averaging 21, 8 and 8 isn’t great, let’s put that into context. He’s averaging almost the same amount of assists as LeBron, half a rebound less than LeBron, and he’s easily an All-Defense NBA player. The only reason why we don’t talk about him more is because he’s not scoring those insane amounts. That might change too, the last couple of games are an indication, Jimmy doing whatever his team needs. He’s not bombing 3s from 30, he’s just doing Jimmy. Jimmy ain’t even in the top 15 for MVP conversation and that to me is sad. But we all know Jimmy ain’t care. All he cares about is winning.
