Historically, scoring in the playoffs drops from the regular season because defensive intensity picks up. So the playoffs, especially within a 7 game series seeing the same players over and over again, defenses will hone in on the guy that makes the offense work and hound him. And I’m not saying Curry doesn’t get wide open looks. There are defensive miscues at times and sometimes, the best shooter in NBA history gets left wide open. A lot of times, him being wide open or having .3 extra seconds being open is because of Curry crossing people up without the ball. But this?

We can take for example Luka Doncic who was for some bizarre reason defended by a single defender for more than half the series in the first round. And he was the most doubled player per possession in the regular season. Curry was 10th on the list, but 15th in touches per game. But still in the 4th quarter, there wasn’t even help defense. Even with Damian Lillard being on fire, the Nuggets still decided to guard him 1 on 1 and he torched them. When Curry is guarded 1 on 1, he torches any and every defender, but most times, he doesn’t get the chance. When Curry dumps offs the ball after a double or triple team comes rushing at him, this happens.

The whole point of this video is not to undermine other superstars. No, they all are the defensive focus of teams having to carry teams. But in relative comparison, Stephen Curry put the fear in so many teams that they all rushed to guard him wherever he was on the court. And if he got on fire, the entire team is being thrown at him.

No I’m being serious, right here, the double comes for Curry after the pick, but look at the entire Jazz team. Joe Ingles got sucked in and is guarding no one, Royce O’Neal is trying to guard 2 but is also drifting towards Curry, and Mike Conley is attempting to guard 2 while also being more weak side help. The Jazz are one of the best defenses in the league and it made sense to do this because Draymond and Oubre are shooting horribly from 3.

Let’s look at this play in which Curry fakes the reset, cuts back, then stutters to threaten the three, then continue all the way to make a tough layup. The number of fakes before even dribbling, that takes cardio. You’ve probably heard multiple players and coaches around the league say that his conditioning is out of this world. And to be fair, players like Dame do have off-ball movement, but also have possessions like this. They are human. Curry meanwhile is ridiculous.

His pure off-ball gravity sucks people in and gets his teammates wide open looks at the rim. Right here, the Twolves focus on Curry, forget about Oubre. Or even here, the Celtics run at Curry before he gets the ball and leave Toscano wide open under the rim.

Keep in mind that Curry is not overpowering physically, nor can he just bully defenders in the paint. It’s actually easier to keep him out on the perimeter or to bring a double in the paint with any player to significantly change Curry’s path. So in theory, a single defender should be enough on the perimeter and packing a few people in the paint should be enough to derail Curry. But I don’t want to make the statement that Curry is the best for his size, forget the size, just look at what’s actually happening. And to compare defenses when Curry drives, it’s the same as LeBron driving. Ridiculous to think but look at these side by side, looks how both are drawing 3-4 defenders. Curry got this much attention without anyone in the paint or the roll man. Yes, teams are wary of passing from LeBron and to a lesser extent Steph, but again, teams are stacking to stop Curry in the paint on top of the perimeter.

The thing is when you don’t double, it’s almost always an automatic bucket down the stretch. Like in the game against Philly with a minute left up 6. Curry isolates George Hill and right here, there’s a double coming from Embiid, but it’s a late trap. Curry crosses back to his left, Embiid has goes back and Curry just cooks Hill for the dagger three.
