The media power is directing our attention to what they want. They making the rules. That’s why you come to YouTube, when you’re tired of the same 50 million LeBron posts narrative over and over again, or when you just know you’re missing something. Just look at google trends, searches peaked for Zion last year and since the pandemic, it’s been quiet. Just look at ESPN last season versus this season.

Now yes, Zion is not doing this or this . But he’s still doing this. Zion’s not producing the same level of highlights that created the hype, there’s no small kid guarding Zion anymore (help me). But, the fact that he’s doing this against grown men in the NBA, to me, seems more impressive. There were naysayers saying that he’s just Julius Randle. Well shit, Julius Randle about to be an All-Star. We didn’t know if all that size would translate but it did, it did for sure. He’s 260 pounds moving at that speed. In fact, at the end of last season, the only question about Zion wasn’t whether he was living up to the hype, it was that we had only seen a small sample size and whether he could stay on the court. Well he’s doing it. He lost weight, but he’s still unstoppable. Zion shooting 61% from the field is ridiculous. That makes him 6th in the league and the only non center in the top 15. On top of that, he’s the only one in that list averaging over 14 points. He’s the only one that actually handles the ball from the perimeter. He already has 4 games this season scoring 30+ points on 75+ % from the field. No player has more than 1.

There was a time during this season that I was like ayo where did Zion’s athleticism go. Cause I saw him miss an open dunk and not jump that high, not destroy the rim on open dunks, but every once in a while we’ll see Zion just body someone. Those are the moments I remember that it’s not just Zion’s jumping ability because we have seen that before. It’s his speed and leaping ability at that big frame. It probably doesn’t make sense to always jump the way he did in college for dunks because he wants a longer career. BSOLZ mentioned Steven Adams and that’s a great point. The fact that Zion is this effective with a non-shooting center meaning he’s pretty much going up against two defenders every time he simply takes a layup is mind boggling. This is what impresses his teammates the most:

So not only do they got a weird center, imagine this. You have Zion who has this insane speed, would be amazing in fastbreaks, you have Lonzo, a point guard who likes to push the pace and makes great passes on the break, Ingram who still likes to run, and you’re 20th in the league in pace. This shit don’t add up. The Pelicans aren’t winning games, I ain’t saying that a team with faster pace is always better cuz it’s not, but man how do you not design a better offensive scheme for your team. At the same time, Zion is developing, he’s already had games where he takes over to win, where you can feel his determination while watching. I can’t say that it’s Zion’s fault for the Pelicans not winning games.

Now we get to the hype aspect of this, the whole “we thought Zion was the next LeBron” talk. I ain’t saying he’s LeBron, but let’s look at what LeBron did in his second season, LeBron averaged 27.2 points, 7.2 assists, and 7.4 rebounds on 47% from the field in a time where it was much harder to score. Zion’s averaging 24.6 points, 3 assists, 6 rebounds on 62% from the field. He’s nowhere near the level of passing, but we knew that, the hype was for his freakish athleticism at that size. The key part is at that size and so far I’ve seen Zion use that size. It’s not even like he’s playing poorly. He’s still unguardable in a lot of ways. If there was actual spacing on the Pelicans, we might see Zion averaging close to 30. Dang it Pelicans. Let’s also not forget that he’s shooting over 61% from the field. Yet since the pandemic started, Zion has become less and less searched, less and less talked about. Yes, there are a decent amount of Zion post ups but if I told you that he’s only 0.04 points per possession away from Embiid, you wouldn’t have a problem with it right? Yeah, I thought so.
