Just in case you don’t know what Instagram is because you are either 90 years old, born yesterday, or living under a rock for the past decade, Instagram is one of the largest social media platforms in the world. There are only a few bigger such as Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube and soon to be if not already Tik Tok. Man, I underestimated Tik Tok. It’s so addicting and I have accidentally got stock on there for over 30 minutes which is a very long time to ask me to sit still.

How much will Instagram pay? Well, that is hard to say because it will probably be like YouTube and be based on several factors. In fact, we already know the split will be the same as YouTube, 55% to the creator, and 45% to Instagram. But what that means in actual dollar amount will vary by a few things.

How many followers you have, the more eyes the better for the companies that are paying for the ads of course. Right now YouTube requires you to have 1000 subscribers but Instagram already makes you have at least 10,000 followers before you can use the swipe up feature.

Total watch time on your videos. The longer your video the more ads they can cram in there. Again, YouTube makes you have at least 4000 hours of watch time on your channel within 1 year before you can start running ads.

What your content is about. If you are talking about credit cards you are probably going to make more money than if you are talking about bottle cap collecting. Nothing wrong with bottle cap collecting if that is your thing but that’s not where the money is at. Sorry.

So far it looks like they will only be paying on IGTV and IG Live.

What is IG TV? Good question as many has no idea seeing as hasn’t become as popular as they had hoped. I read that only 1% of all Instagram users have downloaded the standalone IGTV app. Didn’t know about it? Me either.

Anyway, Instagram used to be only pictures, and then they starter allowing short videos up to 60 seconds. Then in June of 2018, they launched IGTV. This was long-form video up to 10 minutes long unless you are verified (aka large) account then you can do a full hour.

What is IG Live? Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like. You can go live from your Instagram and all of your followers are alerted and can join in to watch you. They can even join you on your live if you allow them to. Now, this is doing better for Instagram as once the source said that IG Live use is up 70% since the start of COVID 19. Can they maintain that once life gets back to normal is the big question?

It looks like lives will be monetized differently. Not from ads because of course, they can’t control when you go Live or if you leave you to leave your IG Live up but from badge purchases. I don’t’ really get it but I also know that kids spend millions of dollars on different color hair for the Fort Nite players so I don’t doubt that people will also buy these.

Either way, I think this a great move for Instagram and the right move. After all, they have been profiting billions off ads for years now and not giving any of it to the creators. In fact, they bought in 20 Billion worth of ad revenue in 2019 and didn’t’ create a single piece of content themselves.

So you are probably wondering when. Well, they are saying the beginning of June but as a test. So only certain influencers will get it at first. As for the rest of us little guys, we will just have to wait and see.
