Natalya Nagibina, the Bobylevs neighbor and the wealthiest woman in the settlement, prepares to celebrate her birthday. Nagibina asks Lena to let Vera help her with preparations for the birthday party. Vera becomes the hostess, and Katya, the Nagibina’s maid, gets very jealous.
