Japan Culture Shock ~ The Hive Mentality

A distinct part of Japanese culture is collectivism: your role in a society being less individualistic and more a part of a whole. This has it advantages and disadvantages. For example a society with this kind of mindset is usually more aware of each other and for that reason much more considerate. The downside is that people must often sacrifice the characteristics within their personality that make them unique as to allow them to meld better with the greater population. Conversely in the west we have the polar opposite. Our strongly individualistic society tends towards a different set of strengths and weaknesses: we know who we are, but forget about everyone else. Having lived in Japan for a few years now I made this video to discuss these ideas and what I have observed in each respective people.
