Shoichi Yokoi: the soldier who hid for 27 years after WWII

In 1972, local hunters on Guam stumbled upon a man living deep in the jungle. To their shock, it was Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese soldier who had been hiding since World War II ended in 1945 - unaware the war was over.

He survived for 27 years in a handmade underground shelter, wearing clothes crafted from tree bark and living off the land. Yokoi believed it was more honorable to hide than to surrender. When he finally returned to Japan, he said,

"I feel ashamed for coming back alive."
A reflection of the deep bushidō code of honor and loyalty he lived by.

Yokoi’s story became a national symbol of dedication, endurance, and the psychological scars of war. He later lived a quiet life and passed away in 1997.
