JUST IN! Look at Tesla Giga Nevada's New Solar Panels and Progress

Watch Tesla Gigafactory Nevada’s solar panel installation expanding further.

While we focus on Giga Shanghai, Giga Berlin, and Giga Texas, Tesla’s 1st Giga factory-Giga Nevada is also making progress.

As could be seen in a drone flyover of Tesla Giga Nevada, where Tesla builds its EV batteries with Panasonic, a new batch of solar panels was recently installed in the expansive battery factory’s roof, allowing the company to inch closer to its goal of making Giga Nevada a fully sustainable facility.

Footage of the battery factory, which produces powertrains and 2170 cells for the Model 3 and Model Y, was provided by Mark Divittorio, who shared the video on YouTube. The drone footage was compelling, as it revealed that Tesla was indeed continuing its efforts to cover Giga Nevada’s entire roof with solar panels. Interestingly enough, the video also showed numerous freshly-produced Megapacks outside the facility, seemingly waiting to be transported.

Tesla had earlier said that by 2022 it intends to cover the roof of Giga Nevada completely with solar panels.

“Gigafactory Nevada was designed to be covered with solar panels. To date, we have installed solar panels with a capacity of 3,200 KW. This installation will grow to about 24,000 KW–the whole roof of the current building structure–by the end of next year. This will make it the largest rooftop solar installation in the US,” Tesla wrote.

This is good for two reasons. First, Tesla will be able to generate its own electricity during peak demand and will lower its prices during peak hours. As you know electricity prices during peak hours go up. And second: covering Giga Nevada's roof with solar panels will cut Tesla's air conditioning costs.

Those solar panels are raised off the roof, so the sun isn't hitting it. Of course, that depends on what Tesla spent on roof insulation. Many spending nothing on roof insulation. But in Nevada, they should, notes a user under Teslarati's coverage of this topic.
