Iceland’s brewing volcanic eruption could affect large parts of the globe.

Thousands of residents in the fishing town of Grindavik were evacuated ahead of what could be a massive eruption threatening the area.

The country is currently in a “hot spot” where magma often breaks through the earth’s crust which can result in huge eruptions.

In 2010, ash spewed into the atmosphere by an Icelandic volcano brought trans-Atlantic air travel to a virtual standstill for weeks.

The nation’s government is also highly concerned over a geothermal plant near the volcano which provides energy to Iceland’s main international airport.
