Albanese government to seek legal advice on released asylum seekers

The Albanese government has sought legal advice on re-detaining asylum seekers released from indefinite detention after a High Court ruling.

The High Court ruled on November 8 to allow stateless detainees into the community despite some of them being convicted criminals.

This follows a bipartisan decision to pass laws placing restrictions on those released from detention.

The laws include measures such as ankle bracelets and curfews.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil has flagged further restrictions and may consider implementing laws similar to the set used to deal with terrorists.
