Every winter, Korean family’s gather to make kimchi
매해 겨울, 한국 가족들은 김장을 하기 위해 모입니다.
Even though I desperately wanted to see how Jobswa’s family made kimchi
잡솨 형님네 가족분들이 김치를 어떻게 만드시는지 정말 너무나도 보고 싶었지만
We decided to avoid large groups due to the current COVID situation
너무 많은 사람이 모이는 것은 코로나 시대에 맞지 않는 것 같아서 그건 피하기로 했습니다.
Instead, Jobswa and I got to eat our own massive spread
대신 잡솨 형님과 저는 저희만의 엄청난 양의
Of traditional kimjang food.
전통 김장음식을 먹기로 했습니다.

Unfermented kimchi made the same day
당일 갓 만든 아직 익지 않은 김치를
Is paired with su-yuk, or boild pork belly.
수육, 삶은 돼지고기와 곁들였습니다.
Since oysters are wildly abundant in the Korean winter seas
한국의 겨울엔 바다에서 굴이 풍부하기 때문에
A heaping plate is usually included, or even mixed with the fresh kimchi.
굴이 수북하게 쌓여서 식탁에 내거나 김장김치를 곁들여 내기도 하죠.
And being in Jeollongnamdo, hongeo, or fermented skate
전라남도에 왔으니 홍어, 삭힌 홍어도
Is also placed on the table.
같이 먹어줘야겠죠
Today, I was lucky. This was guknae-san Hoksando hongeo
오늘 운이 좋네요. 국내산 흑산도 홍어예요.
