This is another great 8mm film by Louis Dosch. He was right up in the front row, and thanks to him so are we! He got some amazing long clips from a rarely recorded lineup of PFM, likely one of the only 8mm PFM films to exist! Louis is a musician and his music can be heard on #SoundCloud:

I didn't know much about PFM before working on this project, and I still have a lot to learn. So please comment below if I get something wrong so we can all learn something.

My understanding is that this was PFM's last attempt to be a "global" act by hiring fluent English singer Bernardo Lanzetti and touring the U.S. And here they are in the famous Roxy in LA on their Jet Lag tour. This is also a Jazz version of the band with heavier vocals that would not be seen/heard again.

There is so little live PFM recordings from this era, that it was a near miracle that I was able to find audio from the same show as this great film, especially since PFM played 3 days at The Roxy, 2 gigs each night. PFM is a well loved band, but not heavily bootlegged and cataloged like we are used to with Genesis.

I transferred this 8mm film in 2K and did some restoration...I first cleared some noise using AI, which I don't normally rely on as it attacks noise like a chainsaw cutting a piece of paper. But I also blend back grain and detail afterward. I then removed dirt/scratches, stabilized, corrected color (which was difficult due to the harsh red lights), and interpolated to a higher frame rate for smooth motion.

This was my first time hearing this PFM music but I have synced hundreds of films by many bands, and with the audio from the same performance, I thought I would give it a try.

Unfortunately, the audio was fairly poor quality. It suffered from inconsistent distortion and varied frequencies, like the taper would put the mic in different places throughout the show. I balanced the EQ as much as possible and reduced a painful distortion frequency that would pop it's head out around the 5-11KHz range. The result isn't great, but it is 1000x better than the source audio.

The results of the long clips and matching audio, even in their amateur state, really puts you in the audience and lets you feel what it would have been like to see the show. Thanks to Louis for lending such a great film, to Gianluca for help with the track details, and to 1977's PFM for their help and inspiration.

As always, let us know if you have Genesis/Peter Gabriel 8mm films as we transfer, restore, and sync sound to them for free!
