Mike Rutherford - Interview April 1974

On April 12, 1974 Genesis was playing at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana on their Selling England by the Pound tour. After the show, fans Neil Sharrow and Richard "Rik" Cain had just met, and asked to interview Mike in his hotel room.

Neil worked at a campus radio station and planned to use bits of the interview for broadcast. Rik was still in high school and wrote articles for the Indianapolis Star newspaper. Although Rik's pre-show article did appear a few days before the show, his article about this interview was never published.

They did not have much time to prepare, and the tapes they had were running out of room and not in great condition. At times the tapes alternate between running too fast and too slow, the mics getting closer or further from Mike, the interviewers, or other ambient noises. But we restored the tapes as much as possible to piece together what still exists of the interview, and added the transcriptions (which for Mike is not always easy) .

Armed with the recorders and tapes they had on hand, and the questions they could quickly put together, we are treated to an informal hour-long interview, unheard for over 30 years.
