Perfect Shoal Bass Habitat…But They’re Not Here...Why?
After several hours on the Chattahoochee River, I’ve caught plenty of bass.
There’s just one problem:
None of them are native shoal bass.
In fact, I haven’t caught a single native black bass species all day. No shoal bass. No largemouth bass. Only spotted bass and their hybrids.
What makes this especially concerning is the habitat I’m fishing. I’m sitting in exactly the kind of flowing shoal habitat where Shoal Bass should thrive — current, rock, depth variation, and open river flow nearly identical to areas where I regularly catch healthy shoal bass populations in other southeastern rivers.
And it’s spawning season.
This should be one of the easiest times of year to locate shoal bass.
If they aren’t showing up now, in habitat like this, it paints a troubling picture of just how severely this population may have declined.
The fishing itself remains steady, and I land a pair of larger bass that appear very close to true Spotted Bass. One fish in particular is interesting because, despite showing strong spotted bass characteristics, it has reached a size more typical of Alabama Bass influence.
But despite all the action, the species I came searching for still hasn’t appeared.
The search continues.
