In larger rivers, this matters less because deep water is almost always close. But in smaller tributaries, it becomes critical—especially for bigger fish that need refuge from predators and changing conditions.

A lot of anglers make the mistake of fishing water that looks perfect—rocky runs, current seams, classic shoal habitat—only to find smaller fish. That kind of water is great for redeye bass, and even smaller shoal bass.

But if you’re targeting those 2–3 pound fish, you have to think differently.
