30 Bass…And Not One Native Species | Chattahoochee Update

After several hours on the Chattahoochee River, it’s time for a quick lunch break and a recap of the day so far.

The fishing itself has been absolutely unbelievable.

From about five minutes after my very first cast, the action has been nonstop. At least 30 bass have come over the side of the boat in just a few hours — the kind of numbers most anglers would consider an incredible day on the water.

But there’s a problem.

The fish have been overwhelmingly small, with only a handful exceeding 12 inches. And even more concerning is the species composition.

Out of all those fish, not a single native black bass species has appeared.

No Largemouth Bass.
No Shoal Bass.

Just non-native spotted bass and their hybrids.

And the absence of shoal bass is especially troubling because this should be one of the best times of year to find them. During the spawning season, healthy shoal bass populations are often aggressive and relatively predictable in the right habitat. I’ve spent hours fishing exactly that kind of habitat today…and still haven’t found one.

That tells an important story.

This population has likely always been relatively small, and over the years it has experienced both declines and brief rebounds. But based on what I’ve seen so far, the shoal bass in this stretch of the Chattahoochee appear to be in a deeply depressed state right now.

Still, the day isn’t over yet.

There are still several more hours of fishing ahead and plenty of unexplored water remaining. And when this series resumes next week, we’ll continue the search to see if any shoal bass still remain in this historic river.
