Aging Dams on the Chattahoochee | History, Hydropower, and the Future of River Management

On the banks of the Chattahoochee River, I explore one of the many dams that shape rivers across the U.S. This video starts with a quick look at the dam itself—its powerhouse, flood gates, and discharge canal—before stepping back into the broader history of dam construction.

Many of America’s dams were built during the New Deal era under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, meaning that in the coming decade, thousands of these massive structures will approach 100 years old. With age comes big questions: How safe are they? How should they be managed? And what role do they play in today’s river systems?

I also discuss how the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) licenses privately owned dams, and how that process provides opportunities for scientists, managers, and environmental groups to influence dam operations to better support ecosystems and downstream communities.

If you’re interested in river history, hydropower, or the future of America’s water infrastructure, this video offers both a local and national perspective.
