A50 - M1 J24a to M1 J24 - Front View
The A50 runs from Leicester to Warrington, but originally ran to Hockliffe just north west of Luton. Between Stoke-on-Trent and the M1 near Nottingham, the A50 is a major dual carriageway, but the rest of the road has largely been superceded by other roads.
The section of A50 between Stoke-on-Trent and the M1 is a major trunk road dual-carriageway. It was constructed in stages between 1984 and 1999, with most sections opening as the A564. Upon completion, the entire length was renumbered as A50. The route largely follows the route of the originally planned M64 motorway. It has since been built as an all-purpose dual-carriageway. Much of the western end of the A50 built in the 1980s was constructed with a concrete surface instead of asphalt. These are expected to have lower maintenance costs, but produce significantly higher tyre noise. There are still 4 roundabouts between Stoke and the M1 - one at Blythe Bridge, two at Uttoxeter and one at Sudbury. The Uttoxeter roundabouts are scheduled to be replaced with grade-separated junctions in the near future.
This video shows a southbound journey along the A50 - a short link road connecting M1 junction 24a (where there is no southbound access to the motorway) and junction 24 near Kegworth. It is available in three versions:
