Alp Arslan was a Seljuk Sultan who succeeded his uncle Tughril Beg. He ruled from 1063 to 1072. He was a very intelligent and brave king. Appointed Nizam-ul-Mulk Tusi as the Minister of the Sultanate on the recommendation of his father Chagri Beg. During his reign, the boundaries of the Seljuk Empire expanded greatly. He first included Herat and Jund (beyond the Nahr) in his territory. Then after defeating the Fatimid ruler, he added Makkah and Madinah to his territory. This increased the influence and power of the Seljuks in the Islamic world. When the Byzantines attacked, on August 26, 1071, they were decisively defeated in the Battle of Malazkurd. and arrested Caesar Rome Romanus IV. Caesar Rome not only paid war ransom and agreed to pay tribute. Rather, he gave his daughter in marriage to the Sultan's son and gave him the territories of Armenia and Georgia. He was seriously injured by the sword of Yusuf al-Khwarizmi, the governor of Khwarazmi, who was brought as a prisoner in a campaign against the Khwarazmi Turks, and died 4 days later on November 25, 1072, at the age of 42. Alp Arslan was buried in Meru in the same grave as his father Chagri Beg.

Battle of Malazgard
The Battle of Malazgerd or the Battle of Malazkurd was fought on August 26, 1071 (464 AH) between the Seljuk and Byzantine Empires in eastern Anatolia, in which the Seljuks were led by Alp Arslan and the Byzantines were led by Romanos IV. Before the battle, Sultan Alp Arslan offered a treaty to halt the advance of the Byzantine army, but the Romanos rejected it, resulting in a clash between the two forces at Malazkurd, northwest of Lake Van in present-day Turkey. Alp Arslan won a great victory against the Romans and the boundaries of the Seljuk Empire extended further into Anatolia.

This battle led to the fall of the Byzantine Empire and is considered the cause of the Crusades. As a result of the Malazkurd War, Anatolia was permanently lost to the Christians.
