York Walls III

The section of the wall from the end of Skeldergate Bridge to Lendal Bridge.

This includes Micklegate Bar and a look at the Bar Convent.

From here the wall is mainly associated with the Victorian railway industry: an arch was pushed through in 1839 for York's fist railway station (a second added in 1845). That first station was awkward as it acted as a terminus (te original platforms can still be seen in a new building). The second railway station (1877) was built as a through line.

Lendal Bridge opened in 1863 to connect the railway station to the town. Here two towers face each other across the Ouse to protect the city from any invasion (and those thrying to pay taxes!) coming downstream!
