Prestatyn Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located on the north coast of Wales, in the county of Denbighshire, and around 30 miles northwest of Wrexham, is the town of Prestatyn.

The name 'Prestatyn' is derived from Old English 'preosta tun', meaning 'priests' town'. It is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Prestetone'.

In 1157 Prestatyn Castle was built by Henry II after making peace with Owain Gwynedd, King of North Wales. Gwynedd later captured the castle from the English in 1167 and razed it to the ground. All that remains of it today is an earth mound.

For centuries, Prestatyn was a tiny fishing village. This began to change, as with many other coastal towns of today, with the arrival of the railways. In 1848 Prestatyn railway station opened by the Chester and Holyhead Railway. Despite the name, the line originally terminated at Bangor to the west. The construction of the Britannia Bridge in 1850 provided rail access to Anglesey. Seaside resort towns thrived in the Victorian era, when the health benefits of 'taking the waters' were promoted. This line of track, which today is known as the North Wales Coast Line, brought about rapid growth, not only to Prestatyn, but to its neighbour, Rhyl, as well as other towns further west including Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.

The UK's first Kwik Save supermarket opened in Prestatyn in 1965. The company behind this was founded as Value Foods in 1959, and was headquartered in Prestatyn until 2006. The brand went defunct in 2007, but re-emerged in 2012. Only a very small handful of Kwik Save shops remain in existence today.

Prestatyn was the first town in Wales to be officially designated a 'Walkers are Welcome Town'. The Wales Coast Path follows the shoreline and it is the start and end of the 176-mile long Offa's Dyke Path which links Prestatyn with Chepstow on the Severn Estuary. Offa's Dyke refers to a literal ditch that represents the historic soft border between England and Wales. It was established by King Offa of Mercia in the 8th century.

Carol Vorderman of Countdown fame grew up in Prestatyn.
