Winslow Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, and around eight miles southwest of Milton Keynes, is the town of Winslow.
The first recorded reference to Winslow dates back to the late 8th century in a royal charter from King Offa of Mercia, who granted the land here to St Albans Abbey. The Abbot of St Albans secured a market charter for Winslow in 1235.
At the heart of the town is the Church of St Laurence, which dates back to the 14th century, albeit with some 19th century restoration work. Other notable buildings in the town include Winslow Hall and the Bell Hotel - the latter of which is a former coaching inn, and is believed to have stood at the junction between Horn Street, Sheep Street and High Street from as early as the late 16th century.
In 1850 a railway station opened in Winslow courtesy of the Buckinghamshire Railway. This formed part of what was initially a line between Bletchley and Banbury, but later became the Varsity Line that once connected Cambridge with Oxford. In 1968 the station was closed to passengers as part of the Beeching cuts - a controversial move to encourage road travel by closing over 2,000 railway stations across Britain. Today, public transport to Winslow consists of direct bus services from Aylesbury, Buckingham and various other nearby settlements.
Famous people from Winslow include Kajagoogoo bass guitarist Nick Beggs.
