Silvia Romano, an Italian aid worker kidnapped in Kenya in November 2018, landed at Rome's Ciampino Airport on Sunday, one day after her release was announced.

25-year-old Romano was working as a volunteer for an Italian charity called Africa Milele when unknown gunmen kidnapped her in the southern Kenyan village of Chakama in November 2018, in an attack that reportedly wounded five residents.

The aid worker's release was announced by Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Saturday.

Romano, was reportedly freed by the Italian foreign intelligence agency in collaboration with Turkish and Somali officers, some 30 kilometres (18 miles) outside of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu.

Footage shows Romano hugging her mother, father and sister after landing in Ciampino, as well as being greeted by Conte, Di Maio and other officials.

According to Italian news reports, Romano ended up a captive of militants linked to Somalia's al-Shabab militant group.
