Italian aid worker Silvia Romano, who had been abducted while volunteering in Kenya in November 2018, returned home on Monday evening after she had been successfully repatriated on Sunday.

The twenty-five-year-old was filmed receiving a hero's welcome as she exited a car in front of her family's home.

Footage shows Romano dressed in a green traditional Somali-Muslim headscarf entering the building followed by her mother while surrounded by journalists and celebrating neighbours. After entering the family home, Romano waved to the cheering crowd from a window.

Silvia Romano had been kidnapped by militant group al-Shabab in Kenya on November 20th, 2018, and was liberated in Somalia earlier this week, reportedly it was the Turkish secret services that handed her to the Italian embassy in Mogadishu. She was then immediately repatriated to Italy where she was received by President Giuseppe Conte and Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio in Rome.
