An Italian aid worker who had been abducted while volunteering in Kenya in November 2018 was successfully repatriated on Sunday.
Twenty-five-year-old Silvia Romano was filmed receiving a hero's welcome as she exited the plane and was lovingly greeted by her family at Rome's Ciampino airport. After embracing her family Silvia briefly met Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, both of whom shared inspiring words after the encounter.
Reports claim she was freed from the control of militant group al-Shabab on Saturday, somewhere near the Somalian capital of Mogadishu. However, no group has yet officially claimed responsibility for her kidnapping. The Italian secret service had reportedly received assistance from the governments of both Turkey and Somalia during the rescue operation.
"Today is a beautiful day. We are very happy for Silvia, her parents and family members. And for all the Italians who have been anxious during this long wait," exclaimed Prime Minister Conte in an address shortly after Silvia's arrival.
"We have worked hard on every front because these sorts of results can only be achieved if there is full alignment, great dedication, and self-sacrifice on the part of all the departments concerned," the Prime Minister also stated.
