This was my 5th road trip to Ladakh. I have done Manali to Leh in June / July / September earlier. This year I choose to do this trip in October. After doing this trip I feel the best time for Leh Ladakh road trip is June / July. In October, all the greenery is gone and the weather is very dry and cold. But let me tell you, even in pre-winters, Leh Ladakh is very cold and windy. Though it’s very warm in the day but at the same time very windy and cold at night. In October the green beauty is gone but the challenge is doubled. So for me it was still fun.

Manali to Jispa (Distance: 140 Km | Travel time: 4 hrs. approx.):
In summers, this drive is my favorite, but in winters, again all the greenery is replaced by dust and cold. Though I see a lot of less traffic, but the charm is still on. Anyway, so we started like 10.30-11 in the morning and reached Jispa by evening. On the way we crossed Rohtang La pass (altitude: 3,978 m or 13,050 ft.), Tandi, Keylong. At Tandi like usually, I got my tank filled and continued. Jispa was very cold and silent. Usually, it’s full of tourists, because everyone prefers to halt at Jispa for a night or say before driving further to Leh. I walked to the Bhag River and took few shots of the river and the beautiful valley.
Jispa to Leh (Distance: 340 Km | Travel Time: 12-13 Hrs. Approx.):
Again, one of the longest drives during Leh-Ladakh road trip. Keeping in mind, being October, the sun will rise late and set early, we started early in the morning around 5:30 am, so that we reach Leh before sun set. Early morning at Jispa, it was freezing, my windshield was frozen and I had to deice it with a jug of hot water. So we started before sunrise and witnessed the beautiful and bright sunrise on the way near Baralacha La. As expected, we found little snow on the passes. If you want snow, plan in June. SO we crossed the passes on the way one by one: Baralacha La (4,890 m or 16,000 ft.), Nakeela (4,738 m or 15, 547 ft.), Lachulung La (5,064 m or 16,616 ft.) and Tanglang La (5,328 m or 17,480 ft.). Needless to say all the passes are very windy and cold. For my co-travellers, it was even difficult to get out. Sarchu was deserted and the beautiful green plain was all dull, orange and dry. After Sarchu, we also crossed Gata Loops, 22 hairpin bends at 4,190 m or 13,750 ft. Then after crossing couple of passes, we reached Pang and then More Plains and finally Leh. But I must say being off-season, we faced very less traffic. Mostly trucks and army convoys. That day we reached Leh by 7 in the evening.
