Cry of Fear really is one of the brutal horror games out there and yes, it's totally free. Created during the glory days of Source-based modding with the likes of Zombie Panic, Zombie Master, and the hidden, cry of fear had the kind of gameplay that we wouldn't see until Outlast game along with how brutal some of the enemies were and with just how spooky getting chased around a decrepit city could be.

Cry of Fear is made by a small team of modders called Team Psykskallar over in Sweden and the amount content in Cry of Fear is amazing (and amazingly spooky) for any game, let along one that's free to download on steam. Team Psykskallar cites survival horror classics such as resident evil and silent hill among the inspirations for Cry of Fear and it really shows (also you can find Leon Kennedy's signature gun which is pretty cool too)

Best of all was that Cry of fear had a ton of replay value that to the multiplayer and the five different dings you could get on top of special side stories and custom campaigns.
