Which five new sports could be at the 2028 Olympic Games?

OLYMPIC SPORTS

Five new sports have been proposed for the 2028 Olympic games in Los Angeles, so what are they? The organisers of the 2028 Olympic games in Los Angeles recently announced that they want Baseball-softball, Twenty20 cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash to be added to the program. We've seen a few new New Olympic sports in recent years like skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing introduced at the Tokyo 2020 games and breakdancing will be joining the line up at the upcoming games in Paris next year. The LA 2028 organisers say that their new events will bring new athletes and more fans to the games. It'll be the biggest Olympic program in history with a whopping 36 events. The International Olympic Committee will decide next week if the new events will be included.

AFGHANISTAN EARTHQUAKE

Rescuers efforts are underway in Afghanistan after a massive earthquake struck on the weekend. The 6.3 magnitude quake hit the north western city of Herat and surrounding villages on Saturday morning. Taliban officials say more than 2,400 people have died, while thousands of homes have been destroyed leaving many people homeless. Some countries and aid agencies are sending resources and money to the affected areas to help out.

GRASSHOPPER

Armed with a tube and a good set of lungs, conservationists in Melbourne's Royal Park are helping to save the threatened Matchstick Grasshopper one suck at a time. You see, these little critters were once extinct in Melbourne because of things like habitat loss. But thanks to these committed suckers populations are now on the up. So how does it work? Well, they safely suck them up into these attached containers and then re-release them into a new, more suitable home which they say has been mostly successful. It's also inspired a new project - 'The Threatened Species Living Collection', with more than 40 threatened plant species from all over the state set to be introduced to the Royal Botanic Gardens of Victoria including the Pine Mountain Grevillea, which was nearly wiped out by bushfires in 2019.

WHALE HAT

It might look like this whale accidentally tangled itself in kelp, but I promise it serves a purpose. According to new research from Griffith University this is called 'Kelping' when humpback whales use kelp as a toy and even a hat. Fashion accessories aside, researchers reckon the whales also use the kelp to brush off barnacles and as a mouthwash.

SPEED SCRUBBER

Moving along with poise and purpose are the volunteer floor scrubbers at the Asian Games. As their title would suggest they are responsible for keeping the courts nice and clean for the athletes. It's pretty serious business, they have just seconds to get on and off the court which means they need to train hard. Be on high alert and when the time is right move with purpose!

HOT AIR BALLOON

And finally, these hot air balloons are all here for one purpose - the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in the US. It's been happening every year since 1972 and today it draws more than 700 pilots from across the globe who fill the sky with their hot air balloons.
