Bulk Shielding Reactor Project Update

UCOR crews at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory have removed the remaining highly radioactive components from a reactor pool in a facility slated for near-term demolition.
This effort is a crucial step that will allow the pool to be drained and preparation for the demolition of the Bulk Shielding Reactor, also known as Building 3010. The aging, contaminated facility is one of several research reactors that UCOR is currently deactivating at ORNL.
This cask evolution process required highly trained UCOR workers, weeks of preparation, hours of focused labor, and well-coordinated efforts with specialty subcontractors.
DOE EM’s current phase of cleanup is focused on safely clearing away these excess contaminated facilities to eliminate risks and clear land for future research missions.
