Today I've decided to take you with me to Chernobyl on this eye-opening journey…..
It's hard to imagine I was alive during this disaster.
Watch this! If you want to see why anyone would want to visit Chernobyl.
It's for the more adventurous type; it's a place stopped dead in time,
An abandoned place more vivid than anywhere else on Earth, a world gone wild.
A well-laid-out city, with wide streets and all that remains here now, is the reminiscence of a collapsed utopia, overgrown with vegetation.
Just one hundred km from Chernobyl, and already my thoughts had turned toward death.
In the early hours of April 26, 1986, a safety test simulating the effects of a power failure ended in an uncontrolled nuclear reaction;
It caused an inferno in the reactor core that burned for at least nine days, and they evacuated about 130,000 people; more than 40,000 were residents of Pripyat, a "city of the future" built for workers at the nearby plant.
At the time, Mikhail Gorbachev made a speech on the terrifying time scale of the accidents and it's after effects.
The people living here didn't evacuate until days after, told to stay inside their houses. And then soon after, mothers with babies out and about. People just carried on with their lives as though nothing had happened.
Exposure from the particles in the air caused them and others much suffering.
The circumstances of the accident, the staggering magnitude of the cleanup operation, the unimaginable time scale of the aftereffects - impossible to comprehend.
I found the place fascinating and not as unsettling as I expected.
What was alarming was the event happened only 35 years ago.
My reason for this trip, to glimpse the future and inspect what was left after the people left.

Perhaps you can relate to some of my anxieties — the likely disastrous effects of climate change.

"In the Soviet Union, everything was propaganda. All the time, propaganda."

The evacuated city of Pripyat has been left alone for decades; slowly, everything turning back into the forest, overgrown with trees and plants. A glimpse to see what it was before human life and that nature will always take over.
We were forbidden to enter any of Pripyat's buildings because some were clearly ready to collapse at any moment, and we wanted to avoid contamination from the radiation.
However, it is possible to explore former homes and workplaces and some schoolrooms.
Chernobyl is a harsh reminder of an enormous ecological catastrophe.
It is Incredible evidence of civilisation left behind, a monument to an abandoned past.
It's a vision of modernity in wretched decay, millions of complex crumbling ruins, and If we all disappeared, all that would survive was our garbage.
