Why does my knee replacement make noise?

Noises after a total knee replacement are common and often normal. Clicking, popping, and grinding are the three most common noises reported after knee replacement surgery. These noises do not mean there is something wrong.

These noises often develop around the 6 weeks and 12 week timeframes. I believe this is associated with increases in activity levels.

The clicking is usually the underside of the knee cap tapping against the femur implant. Grinding is usually the underside of the knee cap grinding or rubbing against the trochlear groove.

If you are concerned about these noises or these noises are associated with pain please contact your surgeon or physical therapist for a thorough evaluation.
