A second US Aircraft went down in the Persian Gulf

A second US Air Force aircraft has crashed in the Middle East.

An A-10 Warthog 'tank killer' reportedly went down in the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz, around the same time an F-15 fighter jet crashed over Iran.

US officials speaking anonymously confirmed the incidents to the New York Times, though no official statements have been issued by the White House, Pentagon, or CENTCOM.

The A-10 was being used to counter Iranian fast boats and mine-laying operations in the Strait of Hormuz.

The F-15 crash occurred further north near the Iraq-Kuwait border; one crew member has been rescued and is receiving medical care, while the second remains unaccounted for.

A dangerous rescue operation involving Black Hawk helicopters was launched.
