OM by Paramahansa Yogananda
In Indic religions, Om is one of the most important spiritual symbols. The syllable "Om" is commonly called Praṇava (the primeval sound) and Oṅkāra (the word of creation). Akin to the concept of "verbum" in the Gospel of John (In principio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum = In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God), "Om" refers to Atman (the Self within) and Brahman (the cosmic principle). It is a sacred spiritual incantation made before and during the recitation of spiritual texts. The poem "Om" was written by Mukunda Lal Ghosh, popularly known as Paramahansa Yogananda. Born in northern India in 1893, he gained local fame and soon expanded his influence worldwide.
