THE MONASTERY

Luke C. Pherian reads a poem called "The Monastery" by Charles Hamilton Musgrove. The poem deals with temptation which may corrupt the virtue of those who have renounced worldly pursuits to devote themselves to spiritual work. Monastic life plays an important role in many Christian churches, especially in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions, as well as in other faiths such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. In other religions monasticism is criticized and not practiced, as in Islam and Zoroastrianism, or plays a marginal role, as in modern Judaism. In the context of self-control and ego depletion, temptation may disrupt an individual's ability to wait for long-term goals. Therefore, embracing the transience of life is true wisdom.
