Artemis II’s four astronauts returned safely from a 10-day test flight that circled the moon, the first crewed lunar mission in more than half a century. Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canada’s Jeremy Hansen splashed down in the Pacific off San Diego aboard the Orion capsule, Integrity, after a reentry and a six-minute communications blackout. The mission, launched April 1 from Florida, captured unseen views of the lunar far side, total solar eclipse and Earthrise, setting a new distance record of about 252,756 miles from Earth. Koch became the first woman to fly to the Moon; Glover the first Black astronaut; Hansen the first non-U.S. citizen on a lunar crew. Despite valve problems in water and propellant lines and toilet issues, the crew and families celebrated the milestone, which NASA says paves the way for Artemis III docking in orbit and a lunar base this decade.
